The Mix, Childline & YoungMinds — support for children and young people through family breakdown
REVIEWED BY: Sean McNamara on 2026-08-27
What these services are
Three national charities supporting children and young people — the people family proceedings are ultimately about:
- Childline (NSPCC): 0800 1111 — free, confidential helpline for under-19s, 24/7; also 1-2-1 online chat at childline.org.uk. Children can talk about family court worries safely.
- The Mix: 0808 808 4994 — support for under-25s on family life, mental health, money (themix.org.uk)
- YoungMinds: text YM to 85258 — crisis support for young people struggling emotionally (youngminds.org.uk)
Why this matters in family cases
Judges, Cafcass and the family courts all say the same thing: children cope better when they are kept out of the adult conflict and have someone neutral to talk to. These services give your child that neutral listener — without putting them in the middle of the dispute.
How to use them
- Point your child to Childline rather than becoming their only confidant
- Young people can contact The Mix or YoungMinds themselves, in confidence
- As a parent, you can call the NSPCC helpline (0808 800 5000) for guidance on supporting your child through the case
How this fits your family court case
- Cafcass guardians and Family Court Advisers will speak to your child directly where appropriate — a neutral helpline is complementary, not a substitute
- Never coach your child for talks with Cafcass; let them speak for themselves
