Citizens Advice — Bristol & the South West: family court support for self-representing families

REVIEWED BY: Sean McNamara on 2026-08-27

What this service is

Citizens Advice Bristol (and the network of South West offices — Bath, Swindon, Exeter, Plymouth and beyond) gives free, confidential, independent and impartial advice, including family matters: separation, child arrangements, domestic abuse, and the money/housing problems that accompany them.

How to use it

1. National guidance: citizensadvice.org.uk — the full family library 2. Adviceline: 0800 144 8848 (England) — free phone advice 3. Local access: Bristol's office runs triage and appointments; check their local page for current drop-in times before travelling 4. Webchat for quick questions

What they can and cannot do

  • ✅ Explain options, help with court forms, refer to specialist family/domestic-abuse services and legal-aid solicitors, help with benefits/debt/housing
  • ❌ No court representation; no legal advice on litigation strategy

How it fits your family court case

Bristol hosts the region's main family court (Bristol Civil and Family Justice Centre — see our guide). Use Citizens Advice at the start (options, MIAM, fees) and during your case (forms, money problems). Pair with our Bristol court page and DA-support South West page where relevant.
