School & GP — the two institutions who see your child every day
REVIEWED BY: Sean McNamara on 2026-08-27
Why these matter in family cases
Two non-legal institutions see your child more than anyone else involved in a family case:
- School — teachers see behaviour changes, attendance and who collects your child
- GP / health services — records of injuries, mental health, and appointments
In disputes, both often become evidence sources: letters for court, safeguarding notes, or Cafcass interviewees.
Practical rules that protect you
1. Keep both parents on school/medical contact lists unless a court order says otherwise — unilateral changes look bad and can breach orders 2. Never involve the school in the dispute (no asking staff to report on your ex) 3. Share orders — if you have a child arrangements order, give the school a copy 4. Medical access: both parents with parental responsibility can ordinarily access medical records and information (see our parental responsibility guide) 5. If you fear abduction: schools can be alerted; Prohibited Steps Orders restrict removal
How schools/GPs interact with the court
- Cafcass may ask the school for a view; teachers answer factually
- Courts treat attendance, attainment and stability as welfare indicators (the welfare checklist)
- GP reports can support (or contradict) allegations — they speak for themselves, so never coach a professional
