Rights of Women — free legal advice helplines for women

REVIEWED BY: Sean McNamara on 2026-08-27

What this service is

Rights of Women is a women's charity providing free, confidential legal advice by helpline and email, specialising in family law, domestic abuse and sexual violence. Volunteer solicitors and barristers staff its advice lines — this is real legal advice, not just signposting.

Who it helps

Women (including trans women) — particularly those who cannot afford a solicitor.

Key helplines (check rightsofwomen.org.uk for current days/hours)

  • Family Law Helpline: 020 7251 6577 — divorce, separation, child arrangements, financial matters after separation
  • Criminal/survivors' lines for women affected by sexual violence and abuse
  • Email advice via the website for some services

How to use it

1. Check the open hours on rightsofwomen.org.uk (lines run on set days) 2. Have your questions and paperwork ready — call time is limited 3. Notes from the call can guide your next steps (forms, evidence, legal aid)

How it fits your family court case

Use Rights of Women to understand your legal position on children and finances — including the FL401 protective orders process — and what evidence the court will expect.
