Galop & Men's Advice Line — support for LGBT+ people and male victims of domestic abuse

REVIEWED BY: Sean McNamara on 2026-08-27

What these services are

Domestic abuse affects people of every gender and sexuality — and specialist services exist:

  • Galop — the LGBT+ anti-abuse charity: helpline 0800 999 5428 for LGBT+ people experiencing domestic abuse, sexual violence or hate crime (galop.org.uk)
  • Men's Advice Line: 0808 801 0327 — for men experiencing domestic abuse from a partner or family member (weekdays; webchat available) — respect.phoenixways.org.uk / mensadviceline.org.uk
  • National Rape Crisis helpline: 0808 802 9999 — sexual violence support, all genders

How to use them

  • Call or use webchat; services are confidential and will not judge
  • They understand the specific dynamics (e.g. threats to out someone; abuse within same-sex relationships; disbelief men often face) and can refer to friendly local services

How this fits your family court case

  • Abuse evidence opens the legal aid gateway and supports FL401 protective orders — see our guides
  • Abuse is an exemption from the MIAM requirement — you can go straight to court
  • Tell your Family Court Adviser (Cafcass) — safeguarding is their first duty
